40 years ago. That was when the Watergate break-in turned into one of the biggest scandals in the country. A sitting president, with great gifts and a talented staff. showed he had feet of clay.
We will never know for sure in this life whether or not Richard Nixon was guilty of actual criminal behavior. What we do know is that he did not show good leadership. The Democrats went after him, and that is what they should have done. A problem happened on his watch, and he did not take care of it the way he should have. It was appropriate for him to resign.
Bill Clinton is another deeply flawed man. Much of his personal conduct was reckless and irresponsible. Not to mention immoral. This is in the eyes of many Democrats as well as Republicans. Some of this carried over into how he governed, and he probably should have resigned. He was not held responsible the way Richard Nixon was. However, he did mind the store without burning it down.
I read in a newspaper article this morning that the facts about Benghazi were withheld so as not to ‘tip off’ Al Quaida. Malarky. People in our government knew perfectly well that our citizens were under attack by armed men. We have video footage from one of our drone planes. We had communications from our people on the scene. How can people NOT know the difference between a mob of protestors behaving badly and tossing some rocks and a group of heavily armed people using rifles and mortars?
Former General David Petraeus supposedly testified originally that he thought the attack was an armed assault. The people on the congressional committee that had him testify came away with a totally different message. But now the story is apparently different from what it had been. So what did General Petraeus know, and when?
Then there are people at our State Department. The Benghazi attacks were against our consulate there. Our ambassador was killed, along with three other people. What did THEY know, and when did THEY know it?
Then there is our leader, President Barack Obama, who oversees the administrative arms of government and sets the tone for how our government is run. What did HE know, and when did HE know it? And, more importantly, what did he do in response?
Our government is of the people, by the people, and for the people. They want answers, and they are entitled to get them.
